Summit is the eastern half of Oranjestad's central business district, containing the headquarters of many prominent companies. It's name originates from when the area was once the highest point of the canal and lock system in Oranjestad.
History
Summit was part of the original plot of land that would become Oranjestad, along with the Olde Orangetown area. The city was granted incorporation by the Shire legislature on March 6, 1834. In 1840, the town was divided into two halves, east and west.
Summit's growth can be attributed to two major factors: The first arose after the discovery of the Lusus Caverns beneath the area in 1871, bringing an influx of prospectors and mining infrastructure jobs. The second was the annexation of both Irvington and Alfa Beach in 1902, when the new source of tax dollars brought investors seeking a location close to the main ports and shipping canals. From that point forward the area grew substantially, as many skyscrapers were constructed.
Composition
Summit comprises an area bounded by Skylan Highway to the west, Shai-Ling Road to the east, Saturn Valley to the north, and Brahmin Beach to the south.
Most of the residential units in Summit are conversions of older buildings into modern loft spaces. Single-Family homes are a rarity in the district, with just a few along the rim of Lusus.
Developers have invested more than $4 billion in the first decade of the 21st century to transform Summit into an active city center with residential housing, a nightlife scene, and new transportation.
