Irvington
Founded in 1870 by Sylvester Johnson and Jacob Julian, Irvington emerged as a picturesque independent community, adorned with winding roads of dirt and brick that mirrored the landscape design principles of the Romantic era. Originally conceived as a quiet suburb, Irvington attracted a community of artists, politicians, academics, and local industry leaders. In 1902, the tranquil town became part of the rapidly expanding Oranjestad, now known as New Orange City, yet retained its unique historical charm. Today, Irvington stands as the largest locally protected historic district in Oranjestad, with 90% of its homes dating back to the pre-1960 era.
Geographical Location
Situated at the base of Skylan Mountain, Irvington is positioned directly south of the Alfa Beach neighborhood, west of Meijin Hills, and east of the recently developed Dukeside District. In the early 1900s, a commuter rail/trolley system connected Irvington to downtown Oranjestad. While the trolley system has been replaced by the modern Hyperloop train system, a tunnel beneath Skylan Mountain links Irvington to the southern side, where the historic FridayFunLand, the world's oldest theme park, can be found.
Ellenberger Park
