Dark Isles is a historic settlement located just east of Elmswell in central western Oldeshire. Known for its rustic charm and resilient preservation, Dark Isles is one of the oldest communities in western Oldeshire. While much of the town remains unchanged since its founding, the northern district of Virki represents a newer expansion into the surrounding mountain terrain. The region is characterized by its hilly geography, thick oak forests, and unique mixture of aquatic and terrestrial landscapes.

History

Founded by Quarken95, Dark Isles has long stood as a staple of Oldeshire tradition. Its design reflects a time before modernization, with buildings primarily composed of stone, cobblestone, brick, and oak. Streets are paved in polished white stone and its bridges mix cobblestone and glowstone in classic styles. Over time, the town has remained faithful to its origins, with only minimal additions and expansions.

Geography

Despite the name, only two true islands make up Dark Isles. The rest of the community is built on shallow peninsulas and lowlands that occasionally become isolated during heavy rainfall. The town sprawls across a hilly landscape surrounded by dense oak forest.

Districts and Landmarks

  • Southern Island Home: A small island at the southern extreme hosts a single, three-story residence constructed by Mathrules4 and Colepuck.
  • Timber Lighthouse Island: North of the southern island lies another island containing an ancient timber-constructed lighthouse.
  • Dock and Market Area: The southern part of the main settlement features a large dock with warehouses, a bustling open-air market, and a shipbuilding zone. The highlight of the harbor is the SS Hope, a tall-masted wooden ship gifted to Dark Isles by the settlement of New Haven.
  • Waterfall Quarter: An iconic section of the town marked by a cascading waterfall surrounded by walkways, homes, and businesses. A striking cobblestone bridge spans the waterfall, connecting both sides of the district.
  • Civic and Religious Buildings: North of the Waterfall Quarter lies a narrow isthmus lined with vital town structures: two churches (one with an adjoining cemetery), a library, a blacksmith, a bank, restaurants, and other civic institutions.

Northern District - Virki

  • Cavern Fortress: Virki is a newer extension of the Dark Isles community, built within a large mountain cavern. The interior features defensive walls, residential homes, shops, and a mining facility.
  • Mountain Top: The peak of the mountain holds several additional buildings and an airship dock, offering panoramic views and serving as a vital connection point.
  • Local Myth: Legends speak of a giant spider living within the mountain's depths, with a body width potentially reaching 10 meters (not including the legs), casting an eerie mystique over the area.

Transport and Access

Dark Isles remains largely self-contained, with its design emphasizing walkability and local cohesion. The northern airship dock in Virki provides aerial access, while the central docks serve as a vital maritime link to nearby settlements.
