A century later, a transformation began as farmland on the flats and hillsides along the river was meticulously laid out in lots. The area south of Shai-Ling now comprising the neighborhood of Homestead saw the first modern settlers arrive in the 1770s. Camp Nazareth and The Hemp Collective were among the first developments - both of which still stand today.  One hundred years later, much of the existing farmland on the flats and hillsides by the river was purchased, laid out in lots and sold by local banks and land owners to create the neighborhood of Homestead. The area was officially incorporated into Oranjestad in 1882.  The area has since it’s original development been a low-density upper middle class residential area.
