The Boneyard

The Boneyard is a sprawling, hellish landscape located on the far western edge of the Postrema region, just west of the city of Zephyr. It was designed and built by Master_Chief, and remains one of the most visually distinct and thematically bold areas in the Shire.

Overview

The Boneyard is a hostile, alien terrain characterized by pools of lava, dark volcanic rock, skeletal remains, and strange otherworldly structures. It is surrounded on nearly all sides by water and ringed with charred crimson cliffs, giving the entire area a feeling of ominous isolation. Suspended above the scorched terrain are several large black orbs encased in ivory bone-like cages — eerie, floating constructs that pulse with unknown energy.

The ground below is a field of ash and bones — the remains of enormous, long-dead creatures. Ribcages, skulls, spines, and femurs litter the land, preserved in calcified white stone. Some of these skeletal forms appear to be displayed intentionally, while others are scattered as if deposited by some great catastrophe.

In the center of The Boneyard is a vast lava basin filled with twisted remains of trees and fossilized creatures. Various bone bridges and decaying stone paths link the area together, though many are partially collapsed or unstable.

Key Features

  • Floating Bone Orbs: Gigantic obsidian spheres suspended in midair, each wrapped in claw-like bone supports.
  • Skeleton Fields: Hundreds of bones arranged in neat rows or chaotic piles across the landscape — some the size of entire buildings.
  • Lava Flows: Bright orange lava lakes and rivers carve through the terrain, forming barriers and illuminating the area with an unholy glow.
  • Central Ash Field: At the heart of The Boneyard lies a vast grey basin, filled with skeletal remains and surrounded by lava.
  • The Warning: A message appears upon entry to the area: “The dead are watching you” No one is sure what this means — but many who’ve seen it choose not to linger.

Interpretation and Lore

The Boneyard is shrouded in mystery. Its scale and design suggest that it was either a ritual site, a failed containment zone, or perhaps a battlefield of ancient, unfathomable beings. Some Shire scholars believe the floating orbs are remnants of a long-lost alien civilization, while others suggest they are incubators or containment vessels.

The lava-choked terrain and exposed remains give the impression that The Boneyard is not just a memorial — it’s a warning.

Access

There is no formal railway or transit station at The Boneyard. Visitors must reach it by foot or water from Zephyr. Due to its harsh environment and lack of infrastructure, it is not a typical tourist destination, but it remains one of the most iconic visual landmarks in the region.
