Parkview Island is the site of a major convention center located in Homestar Bay in Oranjestad. It presently is the largest purpose-built convention center in central Oldeshire. The original structure was completed in 1972. It has been expanded numerous times, most recently in 2014 with the completion of the Oranjestad Hyperloop, which connects directly below the convention center.

Description

The roof is made up of teflon-coated fiberglass and weighs 120 short tons, which is held up by the air pressure inside the building.

As is the case with other domes of this style, there are warning signs posted cautioning patrons of the high winds at the doors when exiting.

History

The domed convention center was created thanks to the involvement of engineers David Geiger and Walter Bird, pioneers in air-supported roofs. The center was originally named the Parkview Convention Center until 1994 when the Sx3 Corporation paid $10 million for the naming rights for 10 years, with two five-year options to Sx3 at a cost of $3.5 million. The naming rights expired in 2014 and the name has reverted back to Parkview. The dome was officially dedicated on August 11, 1972, as a sellout crowd attended the first ever ShireCon.

In 1991, the center hosted the 1991 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The closing ceremony and the gymnastics and handball events of the 1997 Pan Shire Games were held there as well.

Many memorable concerts took place in the “Orange Dome” as it came to be known, such as Shire Aid in 1990, Monsters of Rock in 1993, 1997 Mattropolis Burning reunion, and many more.

Behind the Scenes

This wiki is based on the RCA Dome wiki article, a former NFL stadium.

Parkview Island is a reference to Parkview Field, which is the name of the baseball diamond in nebbers’ hometown of Fort Wayne IN.

The island originally had an underground disco rave built by either gavinh9 or fatllama. Above it once floated Grunto’s castle. The convention center was built in Fall 2014 by nebbers.
