Overview

The Lost Commonwealth, situated in the northwest part of the Shire, shares borders with Clementine to the west, Mandolin Island and Portlandia to the north, and Asteria to the east and south. It is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and resilience. The foundation and growth of the Commonwealth are steeped in a narrative of endurance and adaptation.

It is home to the cities of Lost, Found, Ascension and the towns of Estabol Island, Harvestbrook, Verdant, and Zhaozhou Valley. It is also home to the settlement of Pat's Farm and the Lost Valley National Park. A number of Pre-Commonwealth settlements can also be found in the area such as Kraghal, Whindfall, and Falconworth.

Toponomy of Lost

The toponomy of the name "Lost" within the context of the city bears a profound significance rooted in the historical narrative of its inhabitants. The name "Lost" was chosen deliberately, symbolizing both a physical and metaphorical departure from a distant, ancestral homeland that has faded into the mists of time. It encapsulates a longing for a place lost to memory, invoking a sense of mystery and nostalgia that resonates deeply within the hearts of its inhabitants. The residents of Lost, fondly referred to as Lostites, proudly bear this moniker as a tribute to their forebears and as a testament to their unwavering connection to their ancient heritage. The term "Lostites" serves as a poignant reminder of their roots while embracing the ethos of resilience, adaptability, and the spirit of forging a new legacy in The Shire. The terminology of Lost and Lostite was only formally came into common use with the establishment of the Lost Charter in 2014.

Pre-Reckoning to Prehistory

Genetic testing has traced the lineage of Lostite people to a divergent branch of Fraggle Rock human colonists and Empeecee races over 2,000 years ago. However, the true name of the ancestral civilization that birthed the Lostites remains lost to history. The term "Lostite" only gained definition after the first official settlement of Lost in 1900 by the first council of Lost.

The prehistory of the Lostites is shadowed by a turbulent past where their original culture faced near-obliteration. Their ancestors encountered a significant threat from a prior civilization aiming to erase their traditions and assimilate them into a dominant cultural framework. Modern historians speculate the civilization responsible might have been Xamichia, although evidence supporting this theory remains elusive. By the dawn of the Common Era, only a small trace of the descendants of the original pre-Lost civilization remained.

Common Era

For centuries, the ancestors of the Lostite people lived a nomadic or semi-permanent existence, obscured from their ancestral roots, and saw their knowledge of ancient civilization fade across generations. Scarred by attempts to erase their heritage, they lived among scattered communities within The Shire. Fearing persecution and suppression of their cultural identity, the Lostites concealed their origins, leading a secretive life to protect their rich history and traditions.

In 1812, a group of nomadic Lostites established the first settlement that would become the future city of Lost. The foundations of the city began with builders and engineers breaking ground to construct organic shaped platforms out of stone trimmed with quartz which would be later known as a signature element of many future commonwealth cities and towns.

In the year 2014, a visionary named Mech, emerged as a beacon of hope and the face of a new era. Determined to reclaim their lost heritage and bring the fledgling settlement out from obscurity, Mech became the first Mayor of the City-State of Lost with the official ratification of the Lost Charter.

The Lost Charter

Signed on August,11th 2014, The Lost Charter stands as a pivotal document in the history of the Lost Commonwealth. It marked the formal establishment of governance that transformed the weak council into a formal power structure, with formal rights establishing sovereignty, law, freedoms, and most importantly resulting in the solidifying of the Lostite identity as a people.

Following the implementation of the Lost Charter, the city-state of Lost experienced a remarkable metamorphosis. The governance provided by the charter facilitated economic growth, propelling Lost into a position of wealth and significance within the region. It attracted a diverse populace and became a hub for commerce, culture, and influence. But signs of trouble would begin in 2015.

Great Recession of 2016

The Great Recession of 2016 was a pivotal economic downturn that significantly impacted the city-state of Lost, causing widespread instability and social upheaval. Mayor Mech, the founder of Lost, faced intense criticism and opposition as the city grappled with profound financial troubles.

Construction issues plagued the city, notably with the flawed plans for the palatial complex and the subsequent failure of construction loans. Mayor Mech's popularity waned as critics blamed him for these problems, leading to a shift in power. Arthur Daniels, backed by elite populists, seized the mayoral position in the 2016 elections.

Under Mayor Daniels' administration, corruption escalated, further exacerbating the city's economic woes. The elite consolidated wealth while the general populace faced economic hardship. Concurrently, the expansionist ambitions of the neighboring nation of Clementine added to Lost's vulnerability during this period of internal discord.

The Great Recession precipitated a series of events that culminated in the rise of the Founder movement led by Nich Carsi, Mech's former deputy mayor. However, this movement faced harsh suppression by Mayor Daniels' regime, resulting in the imprisonment and subsequent execution of Carsi, sparking further political turmoil.

The recession's effects were far-reaching, weakening Lost's economy and infrastructure. The city's struggles during this period set the stage for the subsequent Lost & Found Civil War, a devastating conflict that reshaped the region's political landscape.

Lost & Found Civil War

The Lost & Found Civil War, spanning from 2018 to 2020, emerged from a culmination of political, social, and economic tensions within the city-state of Lost. The conflict was a direct consequence of the Great Recession of 2016, which had plunged Lost into a state of internal turmoil, fostering discontent among the populace.

Mayor Arthur Daniels' administration, marked by corruption and economic instability, faced severe opposition from a burgeoning political movement known as the Founders. This movement, led by Nich Carsi, gained momentum due to the populace's dissatisfaction with the prevailing political and economic conditions. The Founders advocated for a more communal capitalist approach, seeking to dismantle the stringent regulations of Lost's building code and promote greater opportunities for the citizens. The overcrowding within the city and the suppression of the Founder movement led to an exodus of Lostites, seeking refuge in the countryside and establishing settlements such as Harvestbrook. This fragmentation of the populace exacerbated the already fragile situation within Lost.

The tipping point occurred with the arrest and subsequent execution of Nich Carsi by Mayor Daniels' regime. This brutal act served as a catalyst, galvanizing resistance against the administration's authoritarian rule. Mayor Mech, who had withdrawn from the city's political scene, was spurred out of exile by the news of his friend's death, becoming a beacon of hope for the dissidents. The 2018 elections saw Mayor Mech's return to power, sparking a constitutional crisis as Mayor Daniels refused to step down, alleging electoral fraud. The situation escalated swiftly as Mayor Daniels ordered a crackdown on the Founder movement and the countryside settlements. The burning of Harvestbrook became the ignition point for a series of clashes, marking the commencement of the Lost & Found Civil War.

The conflict escalated into a protracted struggle between Mayor Mech's loyalists and the forces aligned with the Founders. Battles raged across various towns and settlements, resulting in significant loss of life and the depletion of the city-state's economic reserves. The economic strain, coupled with the revelation of corruption by the elite, weakened Lost's defenses.

Ultimately, the war concluded with the collapse of Mayor Daniels' regime and his flight from the city. Mech reclaimed his position as the legitimate leader, establishing residency at Villa de Mech (formerly the mayor's palace) and heralding the dawn of a new era for the region. This period of turmoil laid the groundwork for the subsequent establishment of the Lost Commonwealth and marked a pivotal chapter in the region's history.

Dissolution of the City State

Recognizing the need for fundamental reforms and a fresh start, Mayor Mech announced plans for a new city, Found, across the bay from Lost. This decision aimed to honor the cultural identity of the Founders and symbolize a departure from the city-state's troubled past.

With the establishment of the Lost Commonwealth and the ratification of the Articles of Commonwealth, Mayor Mech assumed the role of President, steering the region towards a new era of governance. The vision for a unified nation, guided by democratic principles and inclusivity, superseded the confines of individual cities.

Consequently, the dissolution of the city-state of Lost was an integral part of this transition. The city-state's governance structure was absorbed into the broader framework of the Lost Commonwealth, signifying a departure from the divisive past and embracing a more cohesive and unified future for the region. The dissolution marked the end of an era for Lost while heralding the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Lost Commonwealth.

On February 10, 2019. The City-State of Lost ceased to exist, and the Lost Commonwealth was born. Mayor Mech was re-elected as the first President of the Lost Commonwealth.

Revival

The establishment of the Lost Commonwealth saw the healing of the divisions between the different factions of the region. In this period, the city of Lost and Found grew, along with the agricultural heartland of Harvestbrook, recovered from the devastating fire during the lost and found civil war. New suburbs were built on the outlying areas of found allowing the flourishing of a working class in contrast to the wealthy Lostite elites. The reputation of Lost as a hidden gem among the shire created a booming tourist industry, with the Pearl Casino and the high-end hotels bringing in millions of dollars in tourism.

3.23.23

But the most devastating and transformative event in the history of the lost commonwealth would arrive on March 23rd, 2023. At 4:15AM, a commonwealth meteorological facility near Falconworth would record the first reading of a cataclysmic 8.2 earthquake event to strike the Lost Commonwealth. But the event would not stop there, as citizens reported seeing intense lights radiating from fissures formed on the surface, the ground began to change from grass dirt and stone to bright white, composed largely of diorite, and calcite. Mountains also soared in the area. A press release was issued by President Mech announcing the tragedy and the creation of the Lost Valley Authority. But the truth and cause of the event of 3.23.23 was not natural, but the opening act of a new theater of war.

Technocore War

The Lost theater of Technocore War was part of a significant conflict called the Technocore War. It profoundly impacted the Lost Commonwealth and the wider region of the Shire. The original conflict was instigated by the TechnoCore, an aggressive and technologically advanced faction led by Emperor Deblon, seeking dominance over the region.

The arrival of the TechnoCore in the Lost Commonwealth traces back to the disgrace of ex-mayor Arthur Daniels, living under an assumed identity, Anton Davies being first contacted by the Org in the slums of then Oranjestad, Daniels was offered support to regain control of Lost. With the aid of the Org, Daniels was provided with military resources, including an army and powerful bombs. Additionally, a bio-copy named Chem, embedded with a synthetic quantum copy of Lost Commonwealth Leader, President Mech, was created by Deblon.

Daniels orchestrated a clandestine infiltration into the Lost Commonwealth, known as the Imposters, seeking to execute a plan to regain power. But in a twist of fate, Daniels was betrayed by Chem, who had a different purpose. Using advanced Mole Tunneling Machines, Chem and the Imposters detonated a seismic bomb on the morning of March 23, 2023, causing catastrophic destruction, killing millions, with the intention creating a time fissure for unknown reasons.

This act ruptured the fabric of time and space, leading to a paradox where Chem and the Imposters were severed from the original timeline, allowing them to escape the fate of defeat suffered by the Technocore and Emperor Deblon. They disappeared into both the past and future, evading the consequences of their actions.

President Mech, recognizing the grave threat posed by the Technocore's actions, declared a state of emergency in Lost, Found, and Ascension. The devastating consequences of the seismic bomb triggered chaos and instability, necessitating urgent measures to address the crisis. Despite the severity of the situation, Mech and his advisors chose not to disclose the full extent of the catastrophe to the public, fearing further panic and chaos. Instead, they strategized to locate the Imposters who had crossed over the time fissure, initiating what would be later termed the Paradox War.

The Technocore War left a lasting scar on the Lost Commonwealth and the region, leading to significant loss of life, widespread destruction, and a temporal paradox that challenged the stability of time itself. Its impact reverberated throughout history, sparking the onset of the Paradox War, a new chapter fraught with uncertainty, dangers, and the quest to rectify the ruptured timeline.

The Paradox War

The catastrophic events of March 23, 2023, triggered an unprecedented upheaval that extended beyond physical destruction. The seismic shockwave not only devastated the landscape of the Lost Commonwealth but also ruptured the fabric of time and space, resulting in the creation of a time fissure. This unstable anomaly emerged as a consequence of unknown forces unleashed during the Technocore detonation, an incident shrouded in mystery and secrecy.

The repercussions of this cataclysmic event precipitated unforeseen consequences, leading to the emergence of what has now been termed the Paradox War. The time fissure created by the March 23 incident set forth a series of temporal distortions, unleashing a paradoxical phenomenon where elements from different timelines became intertwined.

The war, primarily fought across temporal boundaries, involves the clash and intermingling of divergent timelines and alternate realities. Elements from different periods, altered sequences of events, and paradoxical occurrences became entangled, leading to a chaotic struggle between factions seeking to manipulate and control the fractured timelines.

President Mech, cognizant of the fragile temporal rift and the dangers posed by its instability, recognized the looming threat and the potential consequences of temporal paradoxes. However, the truth behind the event and its connection to the Technocore detonation remained veiled in secrecy, concealed from the general public to prevent panic and further destabilization.

The Paradox War, an ongoing conflict marked by temporal disturbances and interdimensional clashes, poses a significant challenge to the stability and continuity of the Lost Commonwealth and the greater Shire region. As various factions navigate through altered timelines and contend with paradoxical occurrences, the outcome of this war remains uncertain, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of the region. Efforts to contain the paradoxes and resolve the temporal disruptions continue, as the struggle to restore temporal integrity persists amidst the chaos of conflicting timelines.

Lost Valley Authority

The Lost Valley Authority (LVA) stands as a pivotal institution within the Lost Commonwealth, primarily dedicated to regional development, infrastructure, and the overall betterment of the Commonwealth's constituents. Established in the aftermath of the devastating March 23, 2023 event, the LVA emerged as a response to the urgent need for comprehensive rebuilding and infrastructural revitalization. Led by a council of experts and professionals, the LVA operates as a civil and government agency, overseeing economic development, sustainable modernization, historical preservation, and infrastructural projects throughout the Lost Valley region. From the reconstruction of devastated areas to the establishment of historical sites, the LVA plays a fundamental role in steering the Commonwealth towards progress and stability.

However, beneath its overt mandate lies a clandestine division within the LVA—an enigmatic and secretive temporal unit tasked with an extraordinary mission. This covert division operates in the shadows, dedicated to investigating and resolving temporal disturbances caused by the March 23 event, as well as hunting down the Imposters scattered among the fractured timelines. This secret temporal division, operating under utmost secrecy and employing advanced temporal technology, seeks to restore temporal integrity and stability across the fractured timelines caused by the Technocore detonation. Their primary focus involves locating and neutralizing the Imposters—entities scattered across divergent timelines due to the anomalous events—and preventing further paradoxes that threaten the very fabric of reality.

While the LVA's overt activities center on the visible reconstruction and development efforts within the Commonwealth, the covert temporal division works tirelessly behind the scenes, navigating the complex web of temporal disruptions and striving to rectify the anomalies caused by the March 23 incident. The quest to locate the Imposters remains a paramount objective, as their existence poses a significant risk to the delicate balance of the fractured timelines and the stability of the Lost Commonwealth. The LVA has not entirely been without opposition and incidents with most notably the Construction Permit scandal of May 2023.

Construction Permit Scandal

In May 2023, the rapid expansion of Lost Commonwealth came under the scrutiny of Laurelian authorities with the suspected involvement of diplomats from the NSE, on improperly permitted moving of abandoned pre-commonwealth buildings. A verbal warning was issued. President Mech issued an apology and a directive firing the contractors who were involved.

Foxy Valley and LC Economic Trade Zone Cooperative

Diplomats from the Lost Commonwealth met with their northern neighbor, The small federal government of Foxy Valley and the independent city of Zephyr, controlled by Zenollo. An agreement was made between the nations to establish a connecting highway network between the countries as well as construct a shared northern port for the transportation of economic goods for exports and imports. However, the treacherous Mandolin straits presented an engineering challenge and the options were limited. Permitting issues and the location of Solurian sovereign territory proximity near the possible proposed routes made the construction of a bridge unfeasible.

The LVA determined that the historic Estabol Island at the northernmost part of the LC was the most suitable site. The establishment of the Old Estabol heritage site was implemented and planning could move forward.

The nearby Mandolin Island still proved to be a challenge for planners, but eventually a solution was found in the form of the Mandolin Straits tunnel. The construction of the Mandolin Straits tunnel was completed by October 2023.

Zephyr Crisis

Shocking news came with the collapse of the first government of the independent city of Zephyr by the departure of founder Zenollo. In his farewell address on October 8th, 2023; he handed over provisional control of the city of Zephyr to the Lost Commonwealth and the Federal republic of Foxy Valley with control of Astari and Jaba being handed over to the lords.

The Commonwealth Regional Loop

In conjunction with the LVA’s highway network, ARC or Ascension Rail Control embarked on the construction of the Commonwealth loop project, a complex three rail project to create a loop connecting the towns and cities of the lost commonwealth together. A full connection was established on November 26th, 2023. Work is still underway on many of the various stations and bridge crossings as of 12.1.23

Governments and Politics

Prior to the founding of the commonwealth, the governance of the area was followed under the Lost Charter as established by the city-state of Lost which was dissolved in 2019 with the formation of the commonwealth.

The Lost Government is a hybrid meritocratic democracy, led by a council of elected experts and professionals based on experience with a branch called the Board of Ratification, which is composed of the heads of each municipality. The council is divided into different branches. The branches are the Council, which is composed with the heads of each of the different heads, Military, Health, Science, Agriculture, Culture, Economics, Tourism, Transportation, Sustainability, Education, and Infrastructure. A central leader, the title of President is elected and holds several key powers including the power of breaking a tie. The current leader is Mech. In any event of a major vote to add or alter an amendment in the constitution, a national referendum is held.

Foreign Relations

The Lost Commonwealth has good relations with most of the nations in the shire, however relations between the NSE and Commonwealth as well as the recent conflict with the Laurelia has strained relations with incidents such as the Building Permit Scandal.

Military

The military of the lost commonwealth was founded in 2019 following the dissolution of the city state of Lost. At the time of its founding, the armed forces of the Lost Commonwealth were mostly territorial security forces such as the Lost City Police Guards, this was combined with members of F.A.R or Founder Armed Revolutionaries.

Following the dissolution of the City-State of Lost, The newly elected leader, Mech recognized the nonexistent global presence of Lost Commonwealth military power. To this effect, he formally established a military and technological security pact with several allied nations, including the Collective Republic of Anchorae along with intelligence and technological blueprints. The military was reformed into five branches, the Commonwealth Armed Defense or CAD, the Lost Aerospace Defense, (LAD), Lost Commonwealth Navy (LCN), and the Commonwealth Coast Guard (CCG)

The Lost Commonwealth Navy and the Commonwealth Coast Guard are currently undergoing a buildup with a new naval base planned in Baymont and several outposts. The predecessor before it was split was The Lost Navy, (LN) formerly founded in 2018 was one of the smallest in the shire, with only one class of gunboats, the Thrasher class. Only three of the ships were completed before the 2018 Recession arrived, forcing the cancellation. One of the ships, the Thrasher was sunk during the Lost & Found civil war. The site is designated a war grave and can be found in the shallow waters near Meridian Park. The current and last active ship of the class is the aging former LN Ripple, was refitted, renamed and transferred as the CCG Skipjack stationed at CCG Base after the dissolution of the navy. The new classes of ships and doctrine of the LCN and the CCG is to establish the security of the local territorial waters, and to counteract the threat of the Solurian and Naoki navies.

In October 2023, the construction of an extensive branch of bunkers and other defense projects was begun by the Lost Valley Authority with ground being broken on the main facility in one of the tallest mountains in the shire, Mount Pariah near Zhaozhou Valley. The cost of the facility is estimated to run into the hundred billions and is the future military headquarters for the CAD and LAD.

The primary agricultural exports are Wheat, Sugar, and Tulips.

Infrastructure

During the era of the city-state of Lost, infrastructure was limited, with the primary connection to other parts of the shire being restricted to one stop on the Cerelia line shortly after the founding of the city. A station in the city of Found was also built in 2019, but due to funding issues, it has yet to become fully operational.

The creation of the LVA marked a new era of construction and increased. In the summer of 2023, in a referendum, The citizens of the city of Lost voted for the renovation and construction of roads for vehicles in the city. By August of 2023, the roads were completed and for the first time, the city could be navigated by automobiles.
