The Chamber of Souls, located underground directly below Castle Wolfen-Neb and the Shiredale neighborhood on the Mainland, is a large subterranean chamber steeped in history. This rectangular chamber measures approximately 28 meters in height, 28 meters in width, and spans an impressive length of 60 meters.

Overview

The origins of the Chamber of Souls are shrouded in the mists of time. While its name suggests a connection to spiritual or funerary practices, there is no concrete evidence to support this hypothesis. In fact, historians speculate that the name might be derived from a profound misunderstanding by the ancient peoples who first encountered the nether portal there.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Chamber of Souls is its function as a central nexus point for a complex network of subterranean tunnels that crisscross beneath the Mainland. These tunnels play a crucial role in the interconnected sewer systems that service the buildings above, ensuring the efficient flow of wastewater and runoff.

The Chamber of Souls was likely built around the first known Nether Portal, in what was then a small natural cave system. The nether portal ceased functioning many centuries ago.

Today, the Chamber of Souls is accessible via an intricate web of tunnels and passages that connect to the surface. Adventurous explorers and historians can venture into this underground enigma to uncover its secrets and appreciate its historical significance.

Today, it stands as a testament to the ancient engineering and architectural prowess of the early inhabitants of the Mainland, inviting intrigue and curiosity from those who dare to delve into its depths.

Behind the Scenes

The Chamber of Souls was originally dug entirely by hand/TNT by nebbers in 2010, before the server went public. It served as a nexus point for the myriad of tunnels in the area, interconnecting the main base (which later became the central train station), and it was the first nether portal location. The sewer system also emptied into the area. Over time, it was materially adjusted with mossy cobblestone and cracked stone bricks. In June 2019, the chamber was revamped with arches and new materials by Spaicol.
