Barad-Dur is a towering fortress-complex located in northeast Oldeshire, just north of Kelimanjaro and directly west of the Colony Bay subregion. Constructed by Lord_Drekar, this ominous citadel stands as one of the most visually imposing and thematically striking strongholds in the region. Its structure and appearance have remained virtually unchanged since its completion.

Architecture & Structure

Barad-Dur is built around three concentric defensive rings, each encircled by deep moats filled with lava. These rings are reinforced with 13 towers:

  • 6 outer towers guarding the perimeter wall
  • 4 inner towers defending the central grounds
  • 3 central towers, including the massive primary spire

The tallest tower, positioned at the heart of the fortress, reaches nearly 80 meters in height—towering 30 meters higher than any other in the complex. It dominates the skyline and serves as the fortress’s focal point.

The Eye

Atop this central spire, suspended between two jagged pillars, is a giant, lidless eye engulfed in flame. Constantly turning, it appears to scan the surrounding land, emanating a sense of relentless watchfulness. The eye remains visible even through the dense, dark skies above, acting as the structure’s most iconic and unnerving feature.

Interior Spaces

The outer and inner towers are filled with soldiers' quarters, while the central tower’s base contains a throne room, concealed deep within the stonework. Access to it is tightly controlled and largely hidden from view.

Surroundings & Landscape

Barad-Dur rises from a bleak, rocky wasteland, broken only by channels of lava and a single east-west road that skirts the fortress. The area is completely devoid of vegetation, save for a few sparse patches on the outer edges.

A thick gray cloud mass hangs permanently above the southern expanse, casting the land below in near-perpetual shadow. This unnatural cover stretches from the fortress outward, emphasizing its influence. Just beyond the northern edge of the region, the clouds lift abruptly and the terrain transitions back into greenery and life.

Transportation

To the south of the fortress, a small stone-brick structure marks the entrance to an underground station served by the Hestia Line. Though rarely used, this rail link connects Barad-Dur to the broader transit network.

Orientation & Symbolism

Every element of Barad-Dur’s design— its eye, towers, moats, and even the cloud cover— seems oriented toward the south. The harsh, desolate terrain unfolds in that direction, as if all of the fortress’s force and attention are focused on some far-off conflict or presence. To the north, the world regains color, reinforcing the stark contrast between Barad-Dur and the land beyond.

Legacy

Barad-Dur stands as a symbol of domination, fear, and unwavering surveillance. Its harsh geometry, flaming eye, and lifeless surroundings project a singular message: this is not a place of peace. It remains one of the most recognizable and foreboding sites in northeast Oldeshire, drawing awe, caution, and speculation in equal measure.
