Adopt-A-Project NGO
Adopt-A-Project
Adopt-A-Project is a nationwide non-profit organization founded in 1972 by renowned urban planner and activist Geraldine Curry. The organization is dedicated to addressing the growing issue of urban blight by partnering with government agencies, notably the Unknown Building Investigation Agency, to document and vet abandoned building projects that may be suitable for adoption by new builders. Adopt-A-Project plays a pivotal role in revitalizing communities and promoting sustainable urban development across the Shire.
History
Founding
Adopt-A-Project had its humble beginnings in 1972 when Geraldine Curry, a visionary urban planner and activist, observed the increasing problem of abandoned building projects in her community of Shiredale. The half-finished structures not only posed safety hazards but also contributed to the overall aesthetic decline of the neighborhood. Determined to make a positive change, Curry founded Adopt-A-Project as a grassroots initiative.
Early Years
In its early years, Adopt-A-Project primarily focused on Curry's Mainland neighborhood, partnering with local government agencies to identify and assess abandoned building projects. The organization's mission was to facilitate the adoption of these projects by new builders and to revitalize the community. By providing a structured approach to project adoption, Adopt-A-Project began to make a significant impact.
National Expansion
As the success of Adopt-A-Project's initiatives became evident, the organization expanded its reach to a national scale. It drew attention from urban planners, activists, and government agencies across the country who recognized the potential of Adopt-A-Project's model to combat urban blight.
Key Partnerships
Adopt-A-Project's partnership with the Unknown Building Investigation Agency (UBIA) has been particularly instrumental. UBIA, a government agency dedicated to identifying and investigating abandoned building projects, provides Adopt-A-Project with crucial information and resources to evaluate these projects effectively.
